The Mayor’s Asian-American Advisory
Board presented the 2006 Educator of the
Year Award to Mai Keisling, an art
instructor at Paxon School for Advanced
Studies in Jacksonville. Presenting the
award was David Chu, undersecretary of
Defense for Personnel and Readiness, at
the second Asian Pacific American
Heritage Luncheon at the Wyndham Hotel
on May 19. Mai is a parishioner at
Christ the King Parish in Jacksonville
and was one of six finalists for Duval
County Teacher of the Year.

Having lost five seniors from last
year’s tennis team, the St. Joseph
Academy Lady Flashes headed into the
2006 season an entire new team with no
experience playing competitive varsity
tennis. They entered the District 4-A
playoffs as decided underdogs. However,
in two days of district tournament play,
the girls’ team lost only one match
against six schools and became the first
SJA tennis team ever to win the tennis
district playoffs.

Father Alan Bower, vocations director
for the Diocese of Saint Augustine, was
presented a grant award by the Catholic
Women’s Club of Jacksonville at their
general meeting on May 8. The vocations
office was chosen out of nine applicants
to receive the $2,000 grant, which will
be used to assist funding of two
seminarians to attend the Institute at
Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

More than 117 golfers turned out for the
annual Bishop Snyder Golf Tournament
held at the Golf Club at Fleming Island
on May 11. The event raised $34,000 for
lighting the football field at Bishop
Snyder High School. The foursome of Jim
Knutzen, Joe Scott, Jeff Thorsen and
Bishop John Snyder were the winners of
the tournament.

The L’Arche Harbor House 16th Annual
Golf Tournament was held at Hidden Hills
Country Club on May 15 in Jacksonville.
More than 120 golfers teed up to raise
$47,000 to benefit the mission of
L’Arche - providing homes for adults
with physical and intellectual
challenges.
The Knights of Peter Claver Msgr. Walter
J. Darcy Council celebrated its fifth
annual ball at the Wyndham Hotel in
Jacksonville on April 22. The theme of
the ball was “Knights and Ladies Under
the Stars” and the fundraiser’s proceeds
were dedicated to victims of Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. Knight Ricardo
Stallings received a plaque and
recognized as “Knight of the Year.”
